The Derivative Economy
We live in a world of adaptations, reboots, and brand successors. Shannon's information theory explains exactly what gets lost each time — and why it matters for what you own.
The same story keeps getting told. A hero with a specific power, an origin wound, a set of antagonists whose motives mirror the hero’s unresolved conflict. The setting changes. The names change. The visual grammar shifts from decade to decade. But the underlying structure is derived. Every iteration is a copy of a copy, each one borrowing its premise from the last commercially successful version of the same premise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe did not invent this dynamic. It industrialized it.
We live in a derivative economy. The question is not whether you are consuming derivatives — you almost certainly are, constantly — but whether you have the tools to identify them and make choices accordingly.
Shannon's Law Applied to Culture
Claude Shannon’s 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" established a foundational principle: every transmission of a signal introduces noise. A signal sent across a channel arrives at the other end with some degradation. The longer the chain, the more degradation. Shannon was describing physical communication systems — telephone lines, radio transmissions — but the principle extends to any system where information is encoded, transmitted, and decoded.
Cultural transmission is exactly such a system. An idea originates in a specific context, with specific formal properties and a specific relationship to its author’s intentions. It gets summarized, adapted, translated, and referenced. Each step is a transmission. Each transmission introduces noise: elements dropped for convenience, nuances lost in format change, emphasis shifted by the new author’s priorities.
A novel has specific properties that are formal consequences of the medium: sustained interiority, control over time and pacing, the ability to inhabit multiple perspectives simultaneously, density of language. A film adaptation of that novel makes different formal choices, necessarily. Some of what made the novel worth adapting cannot survive the medium change. Not because the filmmakers failed, but because Shannon’s law applies: the signal degrades in transmission.
A sequel to the film adaptation is two transmission steps from the original. A franchise reboot two decades later, written by a committee with awareness of the film but not necessarily the novel, is further still. Each iteration is formally derivative of the previous iteration, not of the source. The signal-to-noise ratio decreases monotonically as the chain lengthens.
The Brand Succession Problem
The same dynamic operates in product brands, with measurable commercial consequences.
Consider the trajectory of a cookware brand founded by a professional chef in the 1990s. The founding logic: restaurant-grade materials, designed for daily professional use, sold direct to consumers who wanted the same performance. The founder made every product decision against that standard. The brand grew on the strength of genuine functional differentiation.
Private equity acquires the brand in year twelve. The acquisition thesis is defensible: strong brand recognition, loyal customer base, category leadership. The acquirer retains the name, the visual identity, and the origin story. What changes is the decision-making system. New management optimizes for margin, not for the founder’s professional standard. SKU count expands to cover more price points. Supply chain gets consolidated to reduce cost. The products may still be good by any objective measure. But the information — the specific differences that the brand’s founding philosophy generated in every product decision — has been replaced by a different information source: the P&L.
Vitamix is an instructive contrast. Family-owned and operationally controlled by the founding family’s descendants through multiple generations. The product decisions have been made by people with a direct inheritance of the founding philosophy. The blender you buy today is a transmission from that origin, not from an acquisition thesis. The signal-to-noise ratio is measurably different, and it shows in the product’s durability and performance consistency over decades.
Le Creuset, founded in 1925 and still operating under a philosophy of material quality and generational durability, is another example. The brand has changed ownership, but each transition has maintained operational continuity with the founding production standards. The cast iron cookware produced today is recognizably a continuation of the original signal, not a derivative.
How to Identify the Original
The practical skill is learning to locate the origin of a brand’s signal before you invest in it. This is not difficult but it requires asking different questions than most product reviews prompt.
The first question: who made the founding decisions? A brand that began with a specific founding philosophy — a chef, a materials scientist, a craftsperson with a specific standard — has a traceable signal source. Find it. Read the founder’s original statements about what they were trying to make and why. This is the primary source.
The second question: how many transmission steps are you from that source? One acquisition is one step. A brand that has been sold three times, restructured once, and had its manufacturing moved twice is four or five steps from the origin. Each step is a Shannon transmission. Adjust your confidence in the current signal accordingly.
The third question: what has changed in the product itself? Not the marketing language — that almost always preserves the original signal vocabulary regardless of what has actually changed. The product specifications, the materials sourcing, the manufacturing location, the SKU range. These are the places where transmission noise appears first.
Marcus, a purchasing manager for a restaurant group, describes his evaluation protocol: "I always ask when something changed. Not 'has it changed,' because everything changes. But when. If a brand changed ownership three years ago, I buy a sample batch and test it against the last batch I bought before the acquisition. If I can’t tell the difference, fine. If I can, that’s the signal I needed."
Why This Changes What You Buy
The derivative economy does not make everything worse. Some adaptations are genuinely better than their sources. Some brand successors maintain or improve on the founding standard. The point is not to reject everything that has been transmitted across time, but to stop assuming that the name is the signal.
The brand name is a pointer. What it points to may be the original signal or a derivative of it. The research required to determine which is modest — typically an hour of reading about brand history and ownership — but it has to be done. Most shopping behavior skips it entirely, which is exactly how the derivative economy extracts value without delivering it.
The One-Brand Rule, as practiced through Diffr, encodes Original Priority structurally. When a scene recommendation is made, the evaluation includes the brand’s transmission history. A brand three acquisitions removed from its founding philosophy does not get the same confidence weight as a founder-operated brand or a brand with documented operational continuity. The recommendation is a signal about the signal quality, not just about the product category.
Shannon’s law is not a counsel of despair about derivative culture. It is a measurement tool. Use it to calibrate what you are actually receiving when you encounter a brand, an adaptation, or an idea. Then decide accordingly.
